Mark 14:16-19 So His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the Passover. 17In the evening He came with the twelve. 18 Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, "Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me." 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, "Is it I?" And another said, "Is it I?"
This is a question that every disciple should ask him or herself. “Am I betraying my Lord? Is it I?”
What does it mean to betray the Lord?
Certainly handing Jesus over to death as Judas did is betrayal. Jesus is not bodily here and we cannot deliver Him to death. Is there another way to betray someone?
We betray our country if we give information to the enemy. We betray a friend if we deceive them. We betray a spouse by adultery.
Can we betray someone by misrepresenting them?
Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
The Bible says we can deny God by our actions. If we are disobedient were are disqualified for every good work. We are denying God. Jesus Himself expressed it this way:
Mark 7:6 He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.’
“Is it I, Lord? Do I honor you with my lips but deny you with my life? Now is communion. It is a time to look at my life and see if I am still in the faith. Am I being disobedient to one of your expressed requirements?”
“Do I tell people I am a follower of You and yet tell lies?”
Do I spend my money on foolish, unnecessary and even harmful things? Afterwards do I come to worship with nothing to give to Your work in this world?”
1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
“Is it I, Lord? Do I love the world? Are my thoughts toward You or is my mind absorbed with fashion and fun? Do other people look at me and think that Jesus is coming soon? Or do they only see me doing the same things that they do? Am I really different?”
“Lord, You have given all that You could give in the gift of Jesus. Do I appreciate the gift? Am I working to imitate Jesus in what I say and do? Or do I talk about base and foolish things?
“I come to You Lord for cleansing. I come to you to refocus my thinking on eternal things. Help me to understand what is really important.” Amen.
